August 9th: Village Show

The annual Instow, Westleigh and Yelland Village Show, with beach events from 1pm, Village Hall Show and Cafe from 12-4 and the Instow and Appledore Regatta!

Village Hall Show & Café, 12-4pm
Children and adult amateur competitions in baking, crafts, garden flowers, vegetables, soft fruits, paintings, drawings, photography and creative writing.
Exhibition of work from Instow Community School.
Delicious savouries, teas & cakes will be provided by Instow & Yelland WI

How to enter
All entries should be received, registered and paid for at the Village Hall between 5:30pm and 7pm on Saturday, 8th August 2025. Perishable items may be received at the hall on Sunday 9th August between 9 – 9:30am.
Entrance fees for exhibits: Children Free / Adults £2 per entry

SHOW CLASSES

SECTION A – COOKERY
Unless otherwise stated, all items should be displayed on a plain paper plate appropriate for the size of the item.
A1:  Pre-school – 2 biscuits decorated (can be any shape)
A2:  4 to 11 years – 2 Cupcakes
A3:  12-16 years – 2 Brownies
Adults
A4: Flapjacks x 2 Your favourite Style
A5: Victoria jam sponge (approx. 20cm)
A6: 4 Cheese scones
A7: Freestyle cake (your best showstopper, go mad)
A8: Any bread including specialty bread (e.g. sourdough, focaccia, ciabatta, rye)
A9: Jar of fruit jam or Jelly
A10:Jar of fruit marmalade
A11:Jar of chutney or pickle– any flavour

SECTION B – GARDEN FLOWERS
No floral foam or oasis please
Children
B1:  4-16 years – A selection of garden flowers in a glass jar
B2:  4-16 years – A miniature garden in a seed tray
B3:  4-16 years – A glass jar (not a vase) of wildflowers
Adults (Containers are to be plain glass and as small as possible.)
B4:  5 Sweet peas
B5:  5 Roses
B6:  An arrangement of cut flowers not to exceed 46 cm in diameter
B7:  A glass jar (not a vase) of wildflowers and grasses

SECTION C – VEGETABLES & FRUITS
All entries to be presented on plain paper plates.
Children
C1: 4 -16 years –Vegetable/fruit creation
Adults
C2:  4 Potatoes
C3:  3 Carrots with tops
C4:  4 Onions grown
C5:  6 Runner beans
C6:  Exotic Fruit or vegetable
C7:  5 Tomatoes – on the vine
C8:  5 Tomatoes – off the vine
C9:  2 Courgettes
C10: 1 Cucumber
C11: Bunch of various herbs presented in a glass jar
C12: Giant vegetable
C13: 6 Soft fruits of your choice

SECTION D – CHILDREN’S ARTS & CRAFTS
Any category, any medium e.g. collage, embroidery, applique, patchwork, mosaic, wool, paper, card, tile, weaving, paint, macramé etc.
Topics: 1: A floral painting, any style/medium.
2: A floral wall hanging or A4 sized placemat
3: A clear glass vase with 5 stems of home-made flowers
4:A decorated flowerpot

D1: Pre-school
D2:  4-11 years

All works in the categories below must have been completed in the last 12 months.
SECTION E – PHOTOGRAPHY
Not mounted or framed. 15cm x 10cm
Topic – The Wonder of Nature
E1: Children 4-11 years.
E2: Children 11-16 years
E3: Adults -17years & over

SECTION F – ARTWORK
There is no restriction on medium i.e. watercolour, oil, pastel, pencil or ink sketches, etc. Maximum size of artwork is 60 cm by 75 cm.
Topics: 1 – Summer in the Countryside.
2 – Summer by the Sea.
3 – Summer in my Garden.

F1: Young Adults 11-16 years
F2: Adults -17 years & over

SECTION G – CRAFTWORK
There is no restriction on medium, fabric work, felting, crafting etc
Topics: 1: A clear Glass vase if homemade flowers.
2: A hand decorated summer hat.
3: A hand sewn wall hanging reflecting summertime.

G1: Young Adults 11-16 years
G2: Adults

SECTION H – CREATIVE WRITING
Poem or Prose (If prose, no more than 250 words)
Each entry is to be on one sheet of A4 paper either typed or handwritten. The entrant’s name is not to appear on the front or back.
